Have you ever thought that a pair of shoes can take you to a wide range of story? Not exactly what I'm thinking, but after this day I guess yes. :D Friday 2:00PM to be exact, ready to leave our house to get my medical result and police clearance nearby the Municipal Hall mom told me to get the shoes of my sister from Mr. Eddie, (a famous shoe fixer nearby our place bec. of his quality service). I said yes, anyway Mr. Eddie's shoe repair shop is just across the hi-way where jeeps pass by and the good thing was police station is just 5 steps away from the laboratory clinic, so no need to rush during that time. When I'm about to leave, lightning and thunder starts to clout but then I decided to leave the house before the heavy rain falls. While walking onto the tricycle terminal rain starts to bursts, Oh my? I run to get in the tricycle. Too late because the lower part of my pants and back of my pink t-shirt are almost wet. What a disaster! Anyway, the tricycle is off to Hi-way already. When we already reach the tric terminal in hi-way rain is still at his bursting moment good thing I have my 3-fold umbrella with me. :) (lol)
I waited for 10 minutes in front of a bakery expecting the rain would stop. Minutes later, rain is still falls, time is running and I have no choice but to cross the street. I'm rushing to Mr. Eddie's Shoe Repair Shop to get the shoes of my sister first before getting my police clearance and medical result. Bad thing was Mr. Eddie is not yet finish to fix it, "akala ko mamayang gabi mo pa kukunin, paki-antay mo na lang muna to at magpatila ka muna ng ulan",Mr. Eddie said. He gave me a chair and told me to wait for it. While sitting in front of the shop I find time to twirl and dry up my wet pants and my hair. Hahaha.
The exciting story starts when Mr. Eddie asks me if I'm studying or working. I replied him with this line " Graduate na po ako, Logistics Management course po pero naghahanap pa po ng work.." Suddenly I realized to correct the line 'naghahanap pa po ng work' because I already accepted a job offer and that's the reason why I'm working for my clearance and medical. (lol)
Mr. Eddie, asks me in english if I already took up a Civil Service Exam. I answered him that I planned to take a civil service exam once the online application starts. It seems that an ordinary shoe fixer knows that thing. Impressing! I told to myself. He starts to tell a factual story to encourage me to take a CS exam. Even if you are a professional business woman, a doctor, engineer, registered nurse or owner of a restaurant passing a Civil Exam would be greater than these titles. Once you pass the CS exam, you have all the opportunity to work in government agencies and exercise all the benefits they have. If I am given a chance to work outside except to my shoe repair business I would rather choose to be a government employee, he said. Actually, he's right, so I agreed to what he's saying. He stops talking for a while and focus on fixing the shoe.

After a while, he starts to tell his own story. Mr. Eddie have his own family, He is proud to say that he sent all his children to school and now, he has Registered Nurse, Accountant and a HRM graduate children. A hard working father indeed, I said.
Finally, after telling his story about his family I find time to asks him this question, "Manong, habang pinakikinggan ko kayo, I noticed that you are fluent in english? Are you a college graduate?", I asked. He answered me back. "No, as a matter of fact I only reached 3rd year highschool, napariwara ako dati noong kabataan ko, I joined different groups, nagpa tattoo at ilang beses na akong nakulong." While growing up Manong Eddie realized the mistakes he had in his life, 'it's not too late', he said to himself. He read a lots of English books to enhance his language skills and work hard.
Manong Eddie works as a tourist guide for more than 5 years before. "nalibot ko na yata buong Pilipinas sa kakapasyal sa mga foreigner(laughing), that's the reason why I'm fluent in english", he said. That work is a big opportunity for me to earn money for my future. I asked him How old is he now? He answered that he is already 59 years old. Turning to exercise to the privileges of a senior citizen, I said. With the situation of our country now I would rather pay the full fees than to deduct 20%, he said.
When it comes to physical attributes, you wouldn't notice his real age. A smiling face old man with tattoos. I really enjoyed talking to him. I noticed the note posted to his wall and I knew that he is the one who wrote that note, " The Best way to appreciate your job is to imagine yourself without it." Value whatever you have now, he explained about the note.
"Matatapos na itong sapatos, 5 minutes na lang", he said. I take a look to my wrist watch and its 3:30PM already. Few minutes later, he put the shoes in the plastic bag and as an exchange for his service I gave him my payment then went to get my medical and police clearance
Talking to an old man like him was an honor, hearing stories from his past and even sharing even the darkest days of his life. Indeed, he was a good man of his life. Now, He is happy working in his shoe repair shop and giving quality service to his customer.
